How does Cocois scalp ointment work?
- Cocois scalp ointment contains three active ingredients, coal tar, salicylic acid and precipitated sulfur.
- Coal tar has been used in skin conditions for hundreds of years, but it is still not fully understood how it works, mainly because it is made up of so many different compounds.
- Coal tar has mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects, and relieves itching. It is also absorbed into the skin cells and is thought to inhibit DNA replication in these cells. This slows down cell division and stops the cells from multiplying excessively. In turn, this reduces thickening and scaling of the skin.
- Salicylic acid is a type of medicine known as a keratolytic.
How do I use Cocois scalp ointment?
- Cocois scalp ointment should be applied to the affected areas of the scalp and left for one hour before shampooing off.
- Don't apply the ointment to broken or inflamed areas of skin.
- Wash your hands after applying the ointment.
- The ointment should be used once a week when necessary. In more severe cases you can use the ointment once a day for the first three to seven days of treatment, until the skin has improved.
- If symptoms persist for longer than four weeks despite treatment, you should consult your doctor for advice.
Important information about Cocois scalp ointment
- This ointment is for external use on the scalp only.
- Avoid getting the ointment in the eyes or inside the nose or mouth.
- If skin irritation occurs, stop using the ointment and consult your doctor.
- Cocois ointment may stain fabrics and jewellery.
Cocois scalp ointment should be used with caution in
Children aged 6 to 12 years. This ointment should only be used in this age group on the advice of a doctor. Cocois scalp ointment should not be used in
- Children under six years of age.
- Pustular psoriasis.
- Broken, inflamed or infected skin on the scalp.
- People who are allergic to salicylates, eg aspirin.
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby.
