Exelon (Rivastigmine)

What’s the dose?

• Initially you will probably take 1.5mg twice a day. This may be increased to 3mg, 4.5mg and to a max of 6.5mg twice a day according to how you respond and tolerate the drug.

Could they interact with other tablets?

• There are no known significant interactions with other medications. However it may interfere with medications called anticholinergics so always tell your doctor you are taking Exelon.
• Herbal supplements should be used with caution and only after informing your doctor first.

What are the possible risks or side-effects?

Most common side effects are:

• fatigue
• weight loss
• dizziness
• agitation
• drowsiness
• confusion
• insomnia
• diarrhoea
• headache
• tremor
• vomiting
• nausea

Can I drink alcohol while taking it?

• Patients taking Exelon should not drink alcohol because the combination may cause increased drowsiness and sedation. Also, the sedative effects of alcohol may act as a depressant, counteracting the effects of Exelon.

What if I’m pregnant/breastfeeding?

• Exelon should not be used during pregnancy unless deemed necessary by your doctor.
• Women on Exelon should not breast-feed.
